From what we have been able to learn, it seems that Lynch started for Kiandra some time since to sell cattle, and was returning home on Sunday May 24th, in company with two men named Gillan and Curtis. On that day the deceased and the two persons just named called at Venteman's public house at New Providence, where all three are said to have drunk pretty freely, and they started from there together, taking with them a bottle of grog, and the deceased on leaving was scarcely able to retain his seat in the saddle. What occurred afterwards is as yet involved in mystery, except that they separated from each other somewhere in the bush, and that Gillan reported at Russell's that deceased had gone into the bush. A number of persons went in search of Lynch, but up to Tuesday last could discover no trace of him. On the morning of that day a son of the deceased and James Ryan, came upon the horse the elder Lynch had been riding, and in two hours afterwards they found the body of the man in a close scrub, about two miles from where they found the horse. The mans face had been completely eaten away by the wild cats, the flesh being torn from just above his necktie to the crown of his head. The persons who had been seeking for Lynch having met together, to the number of sixteen, at once agreed to send James Ryan into Cooma with the news, and he arrived on Tuesday evening as stated above. The horse when found had on a saddle and bridle, the off stirrup being across the saddle, and the latter having a mark such as would be caused by the dragging of a person's boot over it when being thrown from his seat. Mr Ryall, coroner, accompanied by Mr Sub inspector Gordon, left town on Wednesday forenoon, for the purpose of holding an inquest on the body, the particulars of which we trust to be able to lay before our readers in next issue. There is good reason for believing that the cause of death of this unfortunate man has been a too great indulgence in strong drinks.
Monaro Mercury and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser, Friday 12 June 1863 Coroners Inquest On Thursday June 4th, John James Ryall Esq., coroner for the district, held an inquiry as to the cause of the death of one James Lynch, who had been found dead in the bush on the previous Tuesday. The evidence taken was very lengthy, but the main facts detailed were similar to those given in our issue of last Friday. The jury, after about half an hours deliberation returned the following verdict: - "we find that the deceased James Lynch, senior, came by his death by exposure to wet and cold, on the night of the 24th May, or early on the 25th May, whilst in a state of intoxication". ----------------------------------------------------------------- --------- Probate 1/9555 1871-72, Volume 26, Series 1 Reference No. 9555 August 1872 This day upon pettition administration of all and singular the goods chattels and effects of James Lynch deceased was granted to William Lynch the eldest son and one of the next of kin of the deceased intestate.
Intestate died the 24th day of May 1863 Goods sworn at 200 pounds Letters of administration dated the same day granted.
